Treat yourself to a few books this Christmas

Tick tock, tick tock… in the last few days, the first snowflakes of the season tickled our cold noses, reminding us that Christmas is just around the corner. Whether you’re someone who eagerly awaits this time of year or more of a Grinch, I suggest treating yourself to a few books that will transport you to a beautiful, decadent, funny, and romantic world… just a few indulgences that will likely make everyone around you a little jealous. Here are my recommendations.

Paris in Love
by Nichole Roberston, Chronicle Books
$16,95

Paris in Love

Nichole Robertson seduced us with Paris in Color, a book in which she revealed magical Parisian moments through gorgeous atmospheric photography, divided into eight colours and eight emotions.

Paris in Love 1

Now she’s back with a new and equally beautiful book, to our great delight. From Hotel Amour to Parisian cafes and romantic messages, this time she opens the curtains on a red, sensual, and spellbinding Paris.

How to be  Parisian wherever you are
by Caroline de Maigret, Doubleday
$16,54

If you’re enamoured with the Parisian look and irresistible charm, you’ll adore this book by Caroline de Maigret – fashion show goddess, muse, and former Chanel ambassador – and her three accomplices.

It’s a highly entertaining book that demystifies the cult of the Parisian woman and makes us laugh by revealing her  imperfections and irreverent character. It’s the perfect read no matter the time or place, as long as you’ve got a glass of wine in hand…

My Paris Kitchen
by David Lebovitz, Ten Speed Press
$24,72

Former pastry chef at renowned restaurant Chez Panisse, David Lebovitz, the most Parisian American out there and a foodie from head to toe, has put together a highly enjoyable book in My Paris Kitchen. Between two recipes and a trip to the market, he delivers witty observations on Parisian lifestyle.

In his own way, he reinvents many French classics: cassoulet, onion soup, coq au vin, scalloped potatoes with blue cheese, warm chocolate cake, almond cake, and madeleines – all of this embellished with gorgeous photos of Paris and his kitchen.

I particularly enjoyed his bit on French attitude (which extends all the way to the kitchen!), French people’s disregard of exact measurements, and their love of  cooking «by the nose». Delightful!

Paris to the Moon
by Adam Gopnik, Quercus
$13,00

Paris to the moon cover

Just like countless Americans, world-famous New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik had dreamed of living in Paris ever since he was 8. His wish came true in 1995, when he moved to the City of Light with his wife Martha and their newborn. Published in 2000, this book is a real gem. His take on French culture is at once biting and friendly, as he highlights lifestyle differences between the French and the Americans, always with humour and intelligence. Each page is filled with delicious anecdotes that will make you smile – if not laugh out loud.  It’s a delectable book, perfect for anyone who dreams of Paris day and night.

Enjoy the reading and happy holidays!
